This is not so much of a knock or jab at anyone in particular, it is more of an observation after working with numerous
"SALES DUDES" over the years. From my time working as an in-house designer to times of freelance and contract work.
I have always picked up on the fact that 95% of salesman have what I call,
"THE BOBBY D EFFECT".
WHAT THE HELL IS THE BOBBY D EFFECT YOU ASK!? Well, let me fill you in...
- The first sign that you may be dealing with a "BOBBY" - "That color just never sold in 1992!"
- The second sign you ARE DEALING WITH BOBBY - "That's never going to sell!"
- BUT ABOVE ALL.... The fact that they just do not like the color so it should not be used is hands down the quickest way to know you have got yourself a "BOBBY"!!!
Let's dive deeper into this though,
like I said before this is only 95% of them. The others are cool as shit and loads of fun to work with. At the end of a designers day opinions and assholes are the same... everyone has one and they always stink!!! To Bobby, we were hired to do what he wants us to do... NOT TO FOLLOW BRAND OR SIMPLE DESIGN RULES. He is the 55 year old that knows exactly what the millennial thinks is cool. He is so in touch with his cool side that he will strut his stuff through the office like he owns the place, even though it's been a year since he has even been back. That guy that points across the room with a quick nod to see if you and everyone else in the room notices his new loud voice. Always waiting for his turn to cut you off from your intelligent approach to insert what has already been decided on without ever having creative or marketing a part of it.
AKA: JOE TOO COOL FOR SCHOOL
TOO ALL THE "BOBBYS" OUT THERE, SHOW SOME RESPECT TO YOUR LOCAL GRAPHICS DUDE. WE LIVE WHAT IT TAKES TO BRING LIFE TO A BRAND, TO MARKET A PRODUCT FOR TOP SALES. WE ARE NOT FUCKING SCREWDRIVERS, WE ARE DESIGNERS
(i'd love to hear more about your experiences with the sales team as a designer or not... COMMENTS WELCOME!)
